"Cash Back" Debit Card Scam |
Cash back at the register
When you pay for your purchases with a check/debit card, you have the option of asking for cash back. For example, you purchase $60 in groceries and ask for $40 cash back. The cashier will debit your account for $100 and give you $40.
The Scam
The cashier will add a "cash back" amount to your transaction without your request. He will then give the money to an accomplice coming through the line after you.
How to protect yourself
ALWAYS check your receipt BEFORE leaving the register. If a "cash back" transaction was completed , it will show on the bottom of the receipt.
